28th Athens Classic Marathon

(Athens, 01/10/2010) Schenker AE will be providing from a single source the Logistics services for the 28th Athens Classic Marathon.

A team of specialists will be co-coordinating all routings for pick-up and deliveries of supplies required from railing along race path to soft drinks and water supplies of athletes in all stations and all in very specific and demanding timeframes.

The Athens Classic Marathon Organizing Committee and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), which is the Official Organizer of the event, expect some 12,500 participants to run in this year’s Athens Classic, compared to 4,000 in 2009, as event reaches 2,500-year milestone.

The Marathon as we know it today is little more than 100 years old, but the springboard from which it launched was the Battle of Marathon, fought 2500 years ago, in September 490BC.

A number of celebration parallel events will take place to celebrate the 2,500 years anniversary from the Marathon Battle, among which are the “Marathon Expo 2010” in Zappeion Conference Exhibition Centre 28-30 October 2010, and the “18thWorld AIMS Congress, 28-30 October.

DB Schenker Greece has a specialised department offering logistics services for Sports Events with vast experience, including events such as the “Athens 2004 Olympic Games”.

In addition, and as part of Company Social Responsibility program, Schenker AE is supporting part of the services provided for the Athens Classic Marathon, choosing to do so for an event that was also awarded by the IOC for its environmental initiatives during the recent Copenhagen Summit.
